The Charles Town Police Department provides law enforcement services to the citizens of Charles Town. If you pay city taxes you are entitled to city services, which include police protection. Charles Town Police Officers are all deputized by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s department and may respond to assist the Sheriff’s Department or other police agencies by request. If you are uncertain as to whether you live in the city or the county, you may contact Jefferson County 911 addressing center at 304 724 6759. If you require immediate police assistance, you may contact Jefferson County Headquarters on the 911 line for emergencies or on number 304 725 8484 for non-emergency calls. The operators can determine which police agency is responsible for service. A Charles Town Zip Code does not entitle you to Charles Town Police Department services. The Zip Code is a postal address that determines where your mail is delivered. If you live in one of the newer subdivisions, your streets may still be under the control of the contractor and not the city. If that is the case, we do not enforce traffic laws on these streets until they are accepted by the city. Some subdivisions have their own rules regarding parking and towing. If the property is private, the police department is not involved in the towing process.
