Hiring Process and Qualifications

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 40 years of age by the date of application and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.  Applicants must take a competitive written exam with a minimum passing score of 70 and successfully meet the requirements of the physical agility screening test as set by the West Virginia State Police Academy.

Prior to appointment, a candidate will undergo a background and financial investigation, polygraph testing, psychological evaluation, oral interview with The Civil Service Commission, and medical evaluation. 

Once employed, a probationary officer must participate in a Field Training Program and successfully complete the 16-week West Virginia State Police Academy basic officer training class.

Benefits

The starting probationary police officer salary for an uncertified police officer is $52,998.00 and a WV certified police officer is $54,323.00. Benefits include access to a fitness center, health, vison and dental insurance, state retirement (PERS), clothing allowance, four-day 10-hour work schedule, tuition reimbursement program, longevity pay, night/evening shift differential, holiday, vacation and sick leave compensation.  All uniforms and equipment are provided including a take-home vehicle.  Promotional opportunities can occur after two years in grade.

Application Process

Applicants for all positions must complete and submit, prior to the advertised deadline, the following documents to the department:

  • Complete the Charles Town Police Department Employment Application and Authorization for Release of Information
  • Provide a copy of Birth Certificate (Note: applicants must be between 18 and 40 years old)
  • Provide a copy of Valid Driver’s License
  • Provide a copy of High School Diploma or GED with scores
  • Provide a copy of Military DD-214 (if applicable)
  • Provide a copy of College/University/Trade School/Technical School/Business School Transcripts and Diploma
  • Provide a copy of Naturalization Certificate
  • Provide a copy of Previous Law Enforcement Training/Certificates

All documents must be fully completed, signed, dated, and notarized (where applicable)

The Selection Process is expected to take approximately three to four months to complete. The process consists of the following steps:

Step 1 –   Submit Application and provide the above listed documents

Step 2 –   Pre-screening of Applications for basic requirements by Charles Town Police Department

Step 3 –   Competitive Written Exam with a passing score of 70 or above. Qualified applicants may receive 5 additional Veteran Preference Points.

Step 4 –    Physical agility screening test as set by the West Virginia State Police Academy.  A physician’s certification will be required prior to participating in any physical testing and must be presented on the day of testing.

Step 5 –   Background and Financial Investigation

Step 6 –   Interview with Background Investigator

Step 7 –   Polygraph Examination

Step 8 –   Interview with the Police Civil Service Commission

Step 9 –   Conditional Job Offer of Employment

Step 10 – Psychological Evaluation

Step 11 – Medical Examination

Step 12 – Formal Offer of Employment

Step 13 – Field Training Program

Step 14 – 16-week West Virginia State Police Academy basic officer training class; accelerated class for out-of-state certified officers.

Anyone not meeting the above requirements, as set by the Commission, will not be eligible.
